It’s that time of year again! Farmer’s markets, fresh garden produce and much, much more. Though the allergies are in full affect, don’t let them deter you from enjoying every moment of this time of year. Now is the time for cleansing, a rebirth and ways to find a balance and manage the stress that piled on throughout the winter months. Balance can be defined in a variety of ways for each of us. From my perspective, balance can begin with the foods that you eat. Because food is such a powerful part of our lives, it has the potential to reek havoc on our bodies, but also the power to heal and give us balance, depending upon the path we choose to follow when it comes to our diet.

Adrenal glands are responsible for releasing hormones in response to stress. They are also responsible for regulating the function of our metabolisms, kidneys, immune systems, blood pressure and more. I’d say they are pretty important! But what are we doing to make sure we are helping them to function properly? Below are some ways that the foods you eat can make a difference on your adrenal glands’ health.

1. Take your Vitamin C! Whether through vitamin C packets, supplements or a tall glass of orange juice every day, make sure you are getting adequate amounts of vitamin C that will support your immune system function. The body’s highest levels of vitamin C are found in the adrenal glands and brain tissues, and the urinary excretion of vitamin C is increased during stress, so make sure to replenish the supply daily!

2.B is for Balance. Feeling dizzy, achy and fatigued? You may be lacking vitamin B. If you are a vegetarian, taking your vitamin B supplements will help get you back in balance and feeling super powered. Also, fortified soy products, like tofu will do the job. Otherwise, eat your eggs, cheese, red meat, fish, shellfish and crab.

3.Cut out sugar. Sugars do nothing but give you sharp energy boosts and leave you to crash. They put a stress on your adrenal glands that is very exhausting and dangerous. Natural sugars are your best bet. Like that in fruits, dark chocolate, etc.

4. I’m going to say it even if you don’t want to read it… cut down/out the caffeine. Use alternatives like green tea if you still need an energy boost, but too much caffeine from other sources is

5. Eat a high protein, low-carbohydrate diet that will leave you feeling satisfied, strong and ready for battle. White flours, processed carbs and pastries are so old school. In today’s society there are many ways to purchase or make gluten-free, whole grain, high protein meals that you don’t need to be rich to afford. Think chickpeas, brown rice, dark greens, nuts, seeds, legumes. Foods that are simple and great for your body.

Also, non-food related ways you can improve your adrenal health include: Finding a gentle and enjoyable exercise regimen that you are able to stick with and will not cause you to overdue exercise and fatigue yourself. For example: yoga or pilates

Downsize the Stress! This is key and the summertime is a great time of the year to get some Vitamin D as you sunbathe your worries away. Enjoy, Have Fun, Stay Healthy and Happy Summer!

**Please consult a doctor before heeding any advice because we are all not the same and our bodies function and respond differently.
